Finnish designer Jalmari Laihinen is the designer behind the Broken Collection – salvaged wood and glass turned into unique pieces of furniture. Why throw away broken wood if something so amazing could be made out of it.
Connecting boards that were previously splintered, Laihinen transforms scraps into beautiful, functional pieces and frames the sharp edges behind glass. While most designers would discard broken wood, he consideres it a unique quality, giving special value to the end product.

Laihinen explains, “Wood is not just a material. It was once the living body of a tree. Wood cracks, breaks and has defects. Often pieces holding these resources are discarded as unwanted, but their value should be embraced as unique.”
