These awesome light sculptures were designed by the designer Paul Foeckler (Split Grain).
They reveal the elemental form and grain in a piece of wood, foraged by the designer from the California region. Fascinating details and hidden beauty are revealed from light emitting from the center of the sculpture, flowing out from each individual slice. A warm, white light traces the contours of the wood capturing beautiful patterns from all angles.
Foeckler finds limbs from cypress or cedar trees and hand selects, cuts, and splits each piece attempting to find a unique form. Not many pieces are in the end appropriate since he wants only the most intriguing ones. Once he finds a special piece, he further refines it, then slices it to bring out the details in the overall shape and grain, sand the faces to a fine surface, and finish with multiple layers of UV protecting clear urethane.
Different versions of this lamp are available. They vary in shape and size.
Some are from cedar while others are from cypress wood
You can choose among the lamp with an aluminum armature, suspended atop aluminum legs or with only felt attached to its base to prevent scratching.
Since they are made from individual pieces of wood, no two are alike.
