The government decree, that would open a vast reserve in the Amazon to mining was suspended by a Brazilian court. They believe that the area as big as Denmark is rich in gold, manganese and several other minerals. Following the widespread criticism, the government revised the decree and prohibited mining in indigenous and conservation areas.
President Michel Temer later signed the statement published by the federal court. In the statement they wrote that the court is suspending “possible administrative acts based on the decree”.
For now it looks like the global outcry prevented the government from opening nearly 30% of the Renca reserve to mining.
