DIY Nordic wood designs
In Design by Jozan, June 27, 2020

Nordic design is a blend of form and function in wooden furniture for Scandinavian feel in your modern home where simplicity is embraced. There is a lot we can say about Nordic wood designs, first, they have been around for many decades, say since post-world war II and even earlier in Northern Europe. It is rapidly gaining popularity in the present day with good reasons, the looks are defined by clean lines, chic minimalism, and airy feel. These reasons justify why so many people intend to bring in Scandinavian feel into the interiors of their homes.

Step by step guide

That said, looking at the picture for the Nordic design for inspiration to actualize in your interior is not a walk in the park. You might begin to wonder which Scandinavian feel is right for you without being too stark or deciding which type of furniture works for you. But with our step by step guide, I believe it makes it easy to pull down what you see on the photo and actualize it in your interior.

Add accents for great results

For great Finnish design, fill Nordic spaces with comfortable accents that define the Scandinavian design style. Choose subdued colors to start with when defining the Scandinavian design style. It serves as a backdrop to the rest of the design and helps bring in separate elements together cohesively. Scandinavian design is normally compared to mid-century modern design. While they are known to borrow details from each other, color pallets set them apart. Mid-century spaces utilize dark color hues while Scandinavian or Finnish design focuses on brightness, light and airy. All the same, choose subdued colors by sticking to pastel colors and go bias on neutrals. If you want to add more color, icy blues and millennial pink will do the trick.

Go with furniture with clean lines

Furniture is one of the great identifying factors in Nordic design. It presents the specific aesthetic look and features simple silhouettes, clean and simple lines plus an emphasis on natural and rustic materials. Where possible, Scandinavian design focus on artisanal products over mass-produced pieces. In this design placement of furniture is as important as the furniture itself. Your focus is to make the furniture the focal point, for example, the center living room around cozy seats, master suites around lush bedroom set and dining around a large farm table.

Add warmth through accent

The comfort level is the key difference between Nordic design and minimalist spaces. Minimalist interiors present a little too stark and cold, while the Scandinavian design is warm and inviting courtesy of cozy and comforting accents. Textiles are a great addition to the comfort level in Nordic design, plenty of pillows and soft blankets add to comfort level and top it all with a throw rug.

Nordic designs embrace negative spaces

The Nordic design is simplistic hence less is more. Let each room’s function be the star of the show, instead of clutter let negative space bring focus to the function. The best way to do this is to empty the room and bring in each piece one at a time considering what value it adds to the design.

I have always been a fan of norse things, from norse mythology to their tattoos. It’s nice that also nordic designs have been in resurgence as of late, they are boat builders so they are skilled in carving wood and that makes their design intricate.
