The creator of HomeMade Modern, Ben Uyeda, documented the process of making a spiral staircase so he could show that anyone can do it at home. The staircase is made almost entirely of plywood, if you count out the steel pole in the middle.
Ben takes a common material, plywood, and using an X-carve, a CNC machine you can build from a kit, cuts out the treads that then stack up on top of each other to build the stair.
Each step uses twelve layers of plywood, about 1-1/4 sheets per step
According to Ben, “the project harnesses the power of new tools like CNC machines yet still requires traditional tools like drills and sanders.”
A truly unique spiral staircase that takes a lot of hard work but the end result is definitely worth it.
