The renovation of this cob barn adds another layer of history to a building that has been expanded and stitched together over the last two hundred years. The project celebrates the rich material patchwork of cob, stone, concrete and brick, keeping much of the existing fabric while inserting a new loadbearing timber frame inside.

Delineation between existing and proposed is clearly distinguished in the external faces of the building. New openings are framed with precast concrete surrounds, while the roof stands proud of the existing walls through a new clerestory, set back from the face of the cob. At high level, vertical fins express this depth of construction and the rhythm of the internal structure, while providing additional solar protection and privacy to the upper floor.
Completes the ensemble of buildings
The barn, distinct from the rendered farmhouse and red brick cottage, completes the ensemble of buildings around the farmyard. [Project description by the Architects]
